UA Fraternity, Honor Society to Sponsor Bone Marrow Donor Event

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s Alpha Epsilon Delta pre-health honors society and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity will host Saving America’s Marrow for a donor registration event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the Ferguson Student Center and the University Recreation Center on campus.

Saving America’s Marrow, which is a grassroots campaign started by three women who travel across the country by van to hold donor jam events in every state, seeks community members aged 18 to 55 to help them reach their goal of registering some 50,000 potential donors in 2015. Registration involves filling out a consent form and undergoing a painless cheek swab.

Bone marrow transplant is often the only cure for blood cancer patients. Donor matches can be difficult to find because there aren’t enough potential donors in the national registry. In addition to registering donors, Saving America’s Marrow seeks to foster positive conversation about bone marrow donation and help people understand how they can save the life of another human being.
