UA to Compete Against Texas A&M in Bone Marrow Registry Drive

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Be The Match On Campus student organization will hold a drive to add student names to the bone marrow registry and provide hope for blood cancer patients from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, and Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Ferguson Theatre.

The drive, which is part of Be The Match’s first Cheek Week challenge, is being held in competition with the Texas A&M University chapter of Be The Match on Campus.

flierIn addition to adding their names to the registry, students can help beat Texas A&M by making monetary donations at the drive or online at http://www.bethematch.org/BeatTAMU or by patronizing the Chipotle restaurant at 1800 McFarland Blvd. East between 4 and 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, when the restaurant will donate 50 percent of its proceeds to Be The Match. Chipotle patrons must mention that they wish to support Be The Match with their purchase.

Be The Match focuses on delivering cures through marrow transplantation. For people with leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening blood diseases, bone marrow from a matching donor can be lifesaving. Campus chapters add committed potential marrow donors to the Be The Match registry, volunteer many hours to educate their fellow students and raise critical funds.

“Be The Match On Campus organizations, are so important to the registry because college aged students are (often) the best matches available,” said Caitlin Roach of UA Be The Match. “The Cheek Week competition versus Texas A&M is a fun way to get students involved in a great cause while feeding in to our schools’ football rivalry.”
