UA Theatre Begins its Gallaway Season With ‘Lend Me a Tenor’

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s department of theatre and dance begins its Marian Gallaway season with Ken Ludwig’s “Lend Me A Tenor” Oct. 7 in the Marian Gallaway Theatre.

Directed by Jeffrey Tangeman, assistant professor of theatre and dance, the show follows the fictional Cleveland Opera Company, who, for one night only, will host world-renowned tenor Tito Morelli in a once-in-a-lifetime production of Othello. But, before the curtain rises, Morelli is discovered dead. In a moment of desperation, the general manager sends his assistant on to pretend to be Morelli. Hijinks ensue.

“It’s fun. And given the state of things in our world, and frankly in many of our own backyards, we all can use a little fun, a little escapism, and some hearty laughs to get through the day,” Tangeman said. “It refreshes and rejuvenates us, giving the ability to carry on and move forward through the muck that can often bring us down.”

Patrons of the Friday, Oct. 10 performance are also privy to a free talk-back afterward with Jennifer Turner from The University of Alabama’s Counseling Center about the benefits of Laughter. Lend Me A Tenor is suitable for all ages.

Tickets are $14 for students, $17 for UA Faculty/Staff & seniors and $20 for Adults. Tickets are available through the department’s website at theatre.ua.edu, the box office, at 205/348-3400, or at the door.

UA’s department of theatre and dance is a part of the College of Arts & Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and Truman Scholarships.
