Scholar to Present Research on Effect of Parental Rejection on LGBT Children

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Caitlin Ryan, director of the San Francisco, California-based Family Acceptance Project, will discuss her policy-shaping research and interventions with LGBT youth, young adults and their families Oct. 22 at The University of Alabama.

Ryan will present her research in a public lecture from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Hotel Capstone on the UA campus. Light refreshments will be served, and the cost of attendance is free. Ryan’s lecture is sponsored by The University of Alabama School of Social Work’s doctoral program, in partnership with the Magic City Acceptance Project.

Ryan has worked in LGBT health and mental health for nearly 40 years. She received her clinical training with children and adolescents at Smith College School for Social Work. Additionally, she developed the first comprehensive research, education, intervention and policy project — the Family Acceptance Project — to help diverse families support their LGBT children in the context of their families, cultures and faith communities.

Her work has been acknowledged by many major health professional organizations and community groups, including the American Psychiatric Association, National Association of Social Workers, American Counseling Association and the American Psychological Association.
