Pulitzer-Prize Photographer Jose Galvez Featured in UA Lecture, Exhibit

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.— The University of Alabama’s Crossroads Community Center is hosting a photography exhibit, reception and lecture featuring Jose Galvez, a Pulitzer-Prize-winning photojournalist. The exhibit will be in the Ferguson Student Center Art Gallery.

The exhibit, “Al Norte al Sur: Latino Life in the South,” will be open during October. The show showcases Galvez’s images of Latinos living in the southern United States. The reception and lecture with Galvez will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, also in the Ferguson Student Center Art Gallery. Each event is free to the public.

In 1984, Galvez was on a team of reporters and photographers for the Los Angeles Times that won a Pulitzer Prize for a series on Latino life in southern California.

Lane McLelland, director of the Crossroads Community Center, was instrumental in coordinating the University’s events to commemorate Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month.

“This photography exhibit is an example of the exciting collaborative efforts by faculty, staff, and students working with the Capstone Network to develop an array of diverse learning experiences celebrating Hispanic/Latino culture on our campus,” McLelland said.

The event is co-sponsored by The College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Communication & Information Sciences, the Summersell Center for the Study of the South, the department of modern languages & classics, UA Crossroads Community Center and University Programs.
