UA’s Huxford Symphony Orchestra Set for Feb. 13

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Call it an early Valentine’s Day present: The University of Alabama’s Huxford Symphony Orchestra performs Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Moody Concert Hall.

The program includes Maurice Ravel’s s “Alborata Del Gracioso,” Robert Schumann’s “Piano Concerto” and Modest Moussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.”

The evening will also feature undergraduate student John Tootle, a sophomore piano performance major at the School of Music. Tootle, a Birmingham native, earned a spot as a soloist at Thursday’s performance by winning the School of Music’s concerto aria competition. Tootle started playing piano at five years old with Ellen Tweiten at Birmingham Southern Conservatory.

He’s won various competitions, including second place in the Alys Robinson Stephens Competition. Studying next with Dr. Yakov Kasman, Tootle has won several other notable awards. As a freshman, he placed second at the 2013 scholarship competition sponsored by the Guild of the Birmingham Music Club.

Tootle is also majoring in composition and is a three-time winner of the William Baxter Music Theory Award at Birmingham Southern Conservatory. He is the pianist at Romulus United Methodist Church.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at the UA School of Music’s website for $10 (general), $5 (senior adults), or $3 (students).

UA’s School of Music is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Team.
