In UA’s Tide Talks, Students Address Variety of Issues

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Tide Talks, a student-run speaker series at The University of Alabama, will host Tide Talks VI at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in Russell Auditorium on campus.

Each installment of the Tide Talks series showcases four diverse UA students who are invited to share personal experiences, trials and successes from their time on campus. Their stories are told in front of both a live audience and a camera. Following the event, Tide Talks publishes the recorded presentations in weekly rotations on the Internet for exposure beyond the University.

The event is free and open to the public.

The speakers and topics for Tide Talks VI are:

• Samuel Guggenhemier, a senior from Dayton, Ohio, majoring in international studies and economics. Guggenheimer will speak about examining the challenges of the modern world by exploring the cultural fabric of Istanbul, Turkey.
• Joana Hubickey, a senior from Madison majoring in biology and Spanish. The topic of Hubickey’s talk will be personalized dieting.
• Jessie Ashton, a senior from Laguna Niguel, Calif., who is majoring in kinesiology and Spanish. Her presentation is titled “Feminism isn’t an F-word.”
• Angie Bartelt, a junior from Oakland, Calif., who is majoring in political science and telecommunication and film. She will speak about her concept that we are never defined by limits, only by our growth.

This semester’s event will also feature live music from guitarist Lee Johnson and didgeridoo player William MacKavin.

Tide Talks serves as a creative, engaging and respected interface for students to express their authentic person narratives. It provides a platform for student success stories and  innovative ideas that spark dialogue across campus and celebrate UA as a center of fresh perspectives.
