UA Co-Sponsors Exhibit at Greensboro History Museum

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Honors College is co-sponsoring the opening of an exhibit at the Safe House Black History Museum at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at 2401 Davis St. in Greensboro.

The exhibit will feature wearable art from Black Belt Designs, a collaborative fiber workshop and arts outreach program started by the Coleman Center for Arts and Culture in York. Works by artists Marilyn Gordon, Lillie Mack and Mary Jo Hare – all made from repurposed materials — will be on display. In addition, Carolyn Zeanah, a Tuscaloosa quilter, will have one of her quilts on display. The handcrafted items are on display at Safe House until February 2014.

The opening on Dec. 6 will feature essays written and presented by students at Greensboro Middle School and a musical presentation by students from Greensboro Elementary School. In addition, Black Belt Designs artists and Zeanah will present their works and speak to the historical significance of the art on display. Following these presentations, the public is invited to tour the museum.

UA’s Honors College is participating as part of its 57 Miles initiative, which partners students with initiatives in Perry County and other areas of Alabama’s Black Belt. In addition to UA’s Honors College, the event is sponsored by the Safe House Museum, Black Belt Designs, the nonprofit Project Horseshoe Farm and Auburn University Rural Studio, which is marking its 20th anniversary of work in Hale County.
