UA to Hold Commencement Exercises May 3-4

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama will hold its spring commencement ceremonies Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 in Coleman Coliseum on the UA campus.

Three University-wide commencement ceremonies will be held this week, at 6 p.m. Friday, May 3 and at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4, to award degrees.

The College of Commerce and Business Administration and College of Engineering will award degrees May 3. The Capstone College of Nursing, College of Communication and Information Sciences, College of Education and the College of Human Environmental Sciences will hold commencement exercises at 9 a.m. May 4, while the School of Social Work and College of Arts and Sciences will award degrees at 1:30 p.m. The School of Law will award degrees at 5 p.m.

Doctoral recipients, education specialists and master’s degree candidates participate with their respective divisions. There are 4,095 degree candidates.

The commencement ceremonies will be broadcast live over the Internet. The webcast will be archived on UA’s website, www.ua.edu/commencement, and will be available for viewing throughout May.

Heather Wood, Spanish teacher and chair of the department of world languages at Mountain Brook High School, will receive the Capstone Inspiring Educator Award. Wood holds a National Board Certification in World Languages and a master’s degree in Spanish and applied linguistics from UA. She was nominated by UA senior and former Mountain Brook student Ellie Friedman.

The Capstone Inspiring Educator Award was created in 2010 to recognize high school teachers who have inspired UA students to achieve their academic and career goals through outstanding teaching, mentoring and support.  Members of the University of Alabama senior class were invited to nominate a high school teacher whose commitment to helping students and inspirational approach to teaching made a difference in their lives.
