Camp 1831 to Introduce UA Students to Traditions, Civic Engagement

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Students new to The University of Alabama will learn about the Capstone’s traditions, meet fellow freshmen and get a taste of adventure during Camp 1831, a program of UA’s Division of Student Affairs Office of First Year Experience.

Camp 1831, to be held in August, will focus on the themes of adventure, history and tradition, leadership and civic engagement. Participants in the three-day, two-night program will travel to a campsite where they will develop leadership skills, connect with other students and experience the pride that comes with being a UA student. Students will leave camp confident and excited about starting a career at UA.

The A-Team, a carefully selected group of 24 current students, will lead events that reflect the four main themes and provide participants with an encouraging atmosphere and peer mentor relationship. Applications to join the A-team are available for any current student at fye.ua.edu and are due Feb 25.

Students entering UA during summer or fall of 2013 are eligible to participate in one of two Camp 1831 sessions in 2013: Aug. 6-8 or Aug. 12-14. Registration will open on April 1 at fye.ua.edu. The program has a fee of $140, including transportation, camp lodging, meals and Camp 1831 gear. The camp will take place at Camp McDowell in Nauvoo.

Limited scholarships are available for students with financial need and are sponsored by UA’s Student Government Association. Space for camp is limited to approximately 150 students a session during the pilot year of this program and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

First Year Experience provides new students with programs, resources and services that will ease their transition from high school, a community college or another college to academic and social life at UA.
