TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama College of Human Environmental Sciences honored faculty member Dr. Jason Scofield with the 2012 Joseph S. Rowland Teaching Excellence Award during recent homecoming activities on campus.
The award is given annually to recognize CHES teaching excellence. Recipients of the award are those faculty members who exhibit mastery of subject matter and create a stimulating and challenging learning environment while demonstrating empathy and respect for students.
Scofield is an associate professor in the department of human development and family studies. His lab studies cognitive development, focusing mainly on children’s language development. The lab’s main line of research examines the conditions in which children learn, or fail to learn, new words.
Scofield has been at UA since 2003 and has taught courses in human and child development and family studies.
He has served the University as a member of the Faculty Senate and as chair of several academic committees. He is professionally affiliated with the Society for Research in Child Development, the Cognitive Development Society and the International Society of Infant Studies.
Additionally, he has served as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous prestigious journals, including the Journal of Child Language and the International Journal of Behavioral Development.
Scofield earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Grand Valley State University and his master’s and doctorate degrees in experimental psychology from the University of Arkansas.
