ANNOUNCEMENTS

PARTNER. INSPIRE. CHANGE. That’s the challenge the 2012 National Outreach Scholarship Conference poses to students who want to build a stronger, more prosperous and just society. The conference will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 3 at the Bryant Conference Center. Undergraduate, graduate and professional students who are engaged in service-learning activities or who are studying the impact of service-learning and community engagement are encouraged to attend. The Graduate Student Assembly invites all UA graduate students participating in research to submit their abstracts for the Graduate Student Association Research Conference, which will be held Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Shelby Hall. Abstracts should be 250-300 words each and are due Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. Submitted posters should be 36 inches by 48 inches. Talks will be approximately 15 minutes with time allowed for follow-up questions and answers. Register at http://sa.tix.com. More information: Joseph Meany at jemeany@crimson.ua.edu. The goal of the conference is to enhance student awareness and involvement in research around the UA campus and to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their work and promote understanding and communication between interdepartmental fields.

EVENTS

Get on Board Day, originally scheduled for Aug. 30, will be held today from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Ferguson Center Plaza. The event will feature more than 350 organizations, vendors and campus departments. GOBD is a great way for students to explore the various involvement opportunities at UA. Capstone International Academic Programs will host a Study Abroad Fair Sept. 18 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Ferguson Center. More information: Brittnay McMillian at bwmcmillian@ua.edu or 348-6377.

The General Interest and Business Career Fair will be held Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Technical and Engineering Career Fair will be held Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Bryant Conference Center. All majors are welcome. Full-time, part-time and internship opportunities will be available. Students must bring their Action Cards and résumés. Required dress is business professional — no flip-flops, jeans, shorts, T-shirts or party wear. All student parking will remain unchanged for the career fair. Students who park in a restricted area or zone not covered by their existing parking permits risk receiving tickets and being fined. Family Weekend 2012 will be held Sept. 21-23. During the weekend, UA families will connect with one another, become more familiar with campus and spend time with their students. The First Year Experience and Parent Programs sponsor Family Weekend. Event activities include a poolside party, barbecue tailgate, jazz brunch and free giveaways. “Astérix et Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre,” the first movie in the Fall Semester 2012 French Movies Series, will be shown Sept. 20 at the French House. The house is located in Unit D of the Smith Woods complex near the Crimson Ride transit hub and the Biology Building. The fall program will focus on history through film. Dr. Katherine Newman will lecture on the effects of tax policy on the working poor Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. Newman is the dean of arts and sciences at Johns Hopkins University, a renowned scholar and the author of “Taxing the Poor: Doing Damage to the Truly Disadvantaged.” More information: Megan Knauss at mmknauss@crimson.ua.edu.

The 6th Annual Dog Splash will be held Sept. 23 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center’s outdoor pool complex. Cost is $5 per dog; free admission for those without dogs. More information: Shane Reeves at reeve007@sa.ua.edu.

LIBRARIES

A valid UA Action Card is needed to access exterior doors at Gorgas, Rodgers, and Bruno libraries each day from 10 p.m. until closing. All exterior doors will be locked at 10 p.m. Patrons should use the Capstone Drive entrance to Gorgas Library, the main entrance to Rodgers Library and either entrance to Bruno Library.

The Sanford Media Center in 205-B Gorgas Library now has a GoPro, a Lensbaby kit, a boom mic kit, a green screen, and additional lighting options for checkout, as well as stock video, compositing footage and Final Cut Pro X. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Applications will be accepted Sept. 7-Oct. 1 for membership in Avanti and Parent Ambassadors. Members serve as official ambassadors for the University during Bama Bound and recruitment events. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Community Service Center seeks committee members for the 2012 Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive. Applications are available at http://beatauburnbeathunger.ua.edu/volunteerInformation.cfm and are due by Sept. 14 at noon. An interest meeting will be held Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. in 312 Ferguson Center.

The Student Government Association in conjunction with the Community Service Center has planned a day of service for Sept. 23 in which students can assist with relief efforts in the areas of Tuscaloosa that remain devastated from the April 27, 2011, tornado. Crimson Outreach is a student organization that works with the United Way of West Alabama.
