TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A summer program at The University of Alabama, funded by the National Science Foundation, is helping train the next generation of chemists and scientific researchers.
The UA department of chemistry is hosting a Research Experiences for Undergraduates program May 28-Aug. 3, under the direction of Drs. John Vincent, professor of chemistry, and Stephen Woski, associate professor of chemistry.
Top undergraduate students with strong backgrounds in chemistry are invited to come to the UA campus for 10 weeks during the summer to work with UA faculty in their research group and to take part in informal seminars and educational activities.
The 2012 chemistry participants and their UA faculty mentors include:
Sarju Adhikari, a Southeastern Louisiana University student, is working under the direction of Dr. Kevin Shaughnessy on “Negishi Coupling of Imidoyl Halides.”
Jerome Arceneaux, a student at UAB, is working under the direction of Dr. David Nikles on “A Targeted, Magnetically Triggered Drug Delivery System for Cancer Therapy.”
Kevin Benham, a Troy University student, is working under the direction of Dr. Daniel Goebbert on “Mass Spectrometry of Energetic Materials.”
Bijay Bhattarai, a Southeastern Louisiana University student, is working under the direction of Dr. Kevin Shaughnessy on “Heck Coupling of Imidoyl Halides.”
Matthew Campbell, a Georgia Southern University student is working under the direction of Dr. Laura Busenlehner on “Preparation of Fluoro-Polymers Based on Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE).”
Kimberly D. Johnson, a Judson College student, is working under the direction of Dr. David Nikles on “A Targeted, Magnetically Triggered Drug Delivery System for Cancer Therapy.”
Rebekah Jones, an Alabama State University student, is working under the direction of Dr. Silas Blackstock on “Exploring New Types of Organic Donor-Acceptor Bonding to Control Molecular Ordering in Co-crystals.”
Arjun Pandey, a Southeastern Louisiana University student, is working under the direction of Dr. Kevin Shaughnessy on “Suzuki and Sonogashira Coupling of Imidoyl Halides.”
Anna Seal, a University of North Alabama student, is working under the direction of Dr. Michael Jennings on “Synthesis of Biologically Active Natural Products.”
Melvin Watson-Richardson, a Southern University student, is working under the direction of Dr. Thomas Vaid on “Synthesis of Electrically Conducting Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Framework Materials.”
Pandora White, an Alcorn State University student, is working under the direction of Dr. Stephen Woski on “New DNA Bases.”
Anika O. Whitener, a North Carolina A&T University student, is working under the direction of Dr. Arun Gupta on “Synthesis of Magnetic Nano-crystals for Biomedical Applications.”
Patience Wright, a Spring Hill College student, is working under the direction of Dr. Carolyn Cassady on “In-Source Decay Mass Spectrometry of Deprotonated Peptides.”
Kristi Wu, a UA student, is working under the direction of Dr. John Vincent on “Examining the Fate of Chromium Nutritional Supplements in Cells and Culture Media.”
Denise Yancey, a Jackson State University student, is working with Dr. Robin Rogers on “Analysis of In Vivo Sorption of Pharmaceutically Active Ionic Liquids.”
