ANNOUNCEMENTS

The University will test UA Alerts and the emergency public address system at 11:55 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8. The test of the PA system will coincide with the Tuscaloosa Emergency Management Agency’s test of the outdoor tornado sirens. The test will last about 30 seconds and should not be disruptive. To ensure that you receive the UA Alerts messages you should update your contact information on myBama. Your cellphone number should be the primary contact number. If you receive the alerts but would prefer to be contacted differently you will need to revise your contact information. To view and make changes to your information online, log in to your myBama account at http://mybama.ua.edu. To get more information and view a video of step-by-step instructions for updating information on myBama, click here.

UA students can meet with representatives from Balfour at the Ferguson Center location of the University Supply Store on Feb. 14-16, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., to see the official ring collection, get sized and ask questions. Orders can also be placed online. The UA official ring is available to all alumni, graduate students and undergraduate students who have earned a minimum of 60 credit hours while pursuing a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree at the University.

Nominations for the 2012 Last Lecture award must be submitted electronically at http://graduate.ua.edu/events/lastlecture.html by Friday, Feb. 10. Undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni are invited to nominate the faculty member they would most like to hear deliver a lecture on the following premise: “If this were your last chance to talk to a group of UA students, what would you say to them?” Retired faculty members are not eligible for the honor. Past recipients include Drs. Bebe Barefoot, Lawrence Kohl, Utz McKnight, Jim Salem and Ron Dulek.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Spring 2 registration is open through Feb. 17. Students can pick up extra hours in this shorter semester. Spring 2 classes, many of which are offered online, begin Feb. 13 and end with the regular semester. To register, students can log in to https://mybama.ua.edu and link to course options by clicking on the Spring 2 logo.

All UA students who are interested in the veterinary profession are invited to a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. in 321 Lloyd Hall to learn about a service-learning trip to Nicaragua. A representative from International Service Learning, the organization that is coordinating the trip, will answer questions. The UA Academic Advisors Association, in conjunction with Student Government Association and the Ferguson Center, is sponsoring a Majors Fair on March 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ferguson Center. Students will have an opportunity to meet with representatives from all college divisions to learn about majors and minors offered, career prospects, and internship and research opportunities available through these units. SGA ELECTION

Statement of Candidacy and Statement of Intent forms are due today by 5 p.m. for students who wish to qualify for the speaking engagement period for the 2012 Student Government Association election. The forms should be emailed to sgaelections@sa.ua.edu. Students who do not want to participate in the Speaking Engagement Period have until Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. to email their Statement of Candidacy and Statement of Intent forms. Visit http://vote.ua.edu to access all forms and to view the complete election calendar. Election day is March 6.

The Elections Board is currently accepting letters of interest from registered student organizations that are interested in hosting a debate or forum prior to the upcoming Student Government Association election. Those interested should email Kelli Knox-Hall at kknox-hall@sa.ua.edu by Monday, Feb. 13, with the name of the group and any proposed format or style for the debate or forum.

CAREERS/EMPLOYMENT

Career Fair Awareness Week is in progress at the Ferguson Center and will conclude on Friday, Feb. 10. Multiple events will help students with their résumés, networking skills and salary negotiation in preparation for the on-campus career fairs to be held Feb. 15 and Feb. 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bryant Conference Center. A Start Smart salary-negotiation workshop will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in 309 Ferguson Center. Start Smart is a workshop designed for women but open to everyone. Participants learn what employers are paying for jobs for recent graduates and how to negotiate a starting salary. Preregistration is required. Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority will hold an interest meeting for spring 2012 recruitment today at 7 p.m. in 307 Ferguson Center. STUDENT INVOLVEMENT/COMMUNITY SERVICE

UA’s Community Service Center is teaming up with the Career Center for the second semester of the Nonprofit Protégé Program, an eight-week experience that allows UA students to walk in the shoes of a nonprofit administrator or chief executive officer in Tuscaloosa. A limited number of students will be selected. Those chosen will help develop an initiative to increase UA’s volunteer contributions to the nonprofit. Students are required to be at least sophomores and have a minimum 2.5 GPA. A detailed application is due no later than Tuesday, Feb. 14, by 5 p.m. to the Community Service Center in 346 Ferguson Center. Interviews will be conducted Feb. 16-17, and applicants will be notified of their status on Feb. 19. More information: Rachel Edington at reedington@sa.ua.edu.

Students can volunteer to help remodel the homeless shelter in the Cottondale, Ala., area for the Tracy Dent Foundation on Feb. 9 and Feb. 15. Volunteers will build a foundation, assemble and install interior and exterior walls, and lay bricks. All volunteers must wear close-toed shoes and appropriate clothing for construction work. The Community Service Center invites everyone to sign up for Habitat for Humanity Brush with Kindness. Volunteers will paint and assist with home repairs in the Tuscaloosa community on Feb. 11, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., and Feb. 17, 12:45-4:30 p.m. Volunteers will meet at the Ferguson Center Plaza to carpool to designated relief sites. The Community Service Center and Habitat for Humanity will host the second House United Habitat for Humanity Build during spring break, March 10-17, in Baldwin County, Ala. The approximate cost for the trip is $300, and the reservation deposit is $100. Students can apply for a scholarship through the CSC website; the deadline is Jan. 27.
