LeaderShape Applications Open to UA Students for Summer Program

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama students interested in participating in an interactive leadership development experience are invited to apply for the LeaderShape Institute, held in Atlanta July 29-Aug. 3.

The UA Division of Student Affairs will sponsor students to attend the 2012 LeaderShape Institute by covering the cost of tuition and travel for the program.

The LeaderShape Institute is a six-day leadership development program where students will learn new skills, gain new knowledge and discover how to make improvements to an organization. Students will develop their leadership potential, improve their communication skills and learn how to collaborate with a team.

“LeaderShape allows students from all different backgrounds, majors and student organizations to come together and learn how to lead with integrity,” said Dr. Mark Nelson, UA vice provost and vice president for student affairs. “When they return to campus, they are able to model this leadership and educate their peers.”

Some 60 college student leaders from all over the nation will attend LeaderShape, making the experience a diverse learning environment. In addition, students will leave the institute with a “LeaderShape Project” — a well-conceived vision and plan of action that will be implemented at UA to make a difference on campus.

“LeaderShape helped me gain the skills needed to implement a vision,” said Leah Boyd, a senior majoring in human development and family studies from Marietta, Ga., who attended last summer. “This new experiential model of leadership was especially hard for me, but through the help of staff and the diverse group of participants, I understood how I could be a leader in any situation.”

Applications are due by Friday, March 2, at 5 p.m. and can be found online at sa.ua.edu. Applications should be submitted to the Ferguson Center Student Union office in 356 Ferguson or emailed to Heather Roberts at hroberts1@sa.ua.edu.
