UA Real Estate Center’s Conference Focuses on ‘Shift Age,’ Global Business

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The new mindset of interconnected global thinking is considered by some as the “new normal” and is the focus for this year’s Alabama Center for Real Estate conference to be held  Friday, Jan. 27, at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center in Birmingham.

The Alabama Center for Real Estate, known as ACRE, is part of the Culverhouse College of Commerce at The University of Alabama.

The theme for the conference is “Alabama Commercial Real Estate enters The Shift Age.” The state’s premiere commercial real estate conference, known as ACREcon, is in its 12th year, and annually hosts a day of intense networking and professional development for 400 business and real estate industry leaders.

The keynote speaker for the 2012 event will be Jim Wilson, CBRE’s chief operating officer and global director of client accounts. CBRE, headquartered in Los Angeles, is the world’s largest commercial real estate services firm and has more than 300 offices worldwide.

Wilson’s responsibilities include oversight of client services, account team recruitment, employee relations, client development, portfolio growth and profitability.

Attendees will also hear from David Houle, author of two books, “The Shift Age” and “ShiftEd.” Houle, a renowned futurist and strategist, describes three forces of change impacting the world:

  • The acceleration of electronic connectedness – change as the only constant;
  • The flow to global – a reorganization of everything global;
  •  The flow to individual – innovative intellectual property as the highest valuation of wealth.

“The Shift Age” is Houle’s term for the period following the “information age.” In the book, Houle explains the forces and dynamics that are reshaping the world. Houle believes the fast pace of change we have experienced with the onset of digital technologies will continue unabated.

More of his commentary is featured on his website, www.evolutionshift.com.

Rod Santomassimo, founder and president of the Massimo Group, the premier commercial real estate brokerage coaching and consulting organization in North America, will discuss his book “Commercial Real Estate Brokers Who Dominate – 8 traits of top producers.”

Other conference highlights include a narrative of Alabama’s four major markets by CoStar, the world leader in commercial real estate intelligence (www.costar.com) and a discussion by a panel of industry experts who will take an insightful, futuristic look at Alabama’s commercial real estate industry.

Dr. Sam Addy, director and research economist at The University of Alabama’s Center for Business and Economic Research, will provide the 2012 Alabama Economic Outlook and Alabama in the Global Economy. And, back by popular demand, will be the afternoon sessions on technology and social media.

ACREcon, hosted by Daniel Corp. and annually supported by more than 50 event partners and exhibitors, begins with registration and a continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m. The conference offers six hours of continuing education credit with the Alabama Real Estate Commission for licensed attendees.
