TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Hud Hudson, professor of philosophy at Western Washington University, will give the second lecture in The University of Alabama’s Philosophy Today Lecture Series.

His talk, titled “The Rabbit in the Garden – A Skeptical Theist’s Tale,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 in 205 Smith Hall on the UA campus.

The lecture is sponsored by the UA College of Arts and Sciences’ department of philosophy and is free and open to the public.

Hudson specializes in metaphysics, philosophy of religion and the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. He is also the author of “The Metaphysics of Hyperspace,” which discusses both atheist and Christian reasons for belief in hyperspace.

Hudson’s lecture will focus on one well-known argument in defense of atheism and his critical evaluation of that argument’s popular support for atheism.

“I will explain and defend a compelling strategy that undermines one very wide-spread argument in favor of atheism,” Hudson said.

In his remarks he will draw from several philosophical sub-fields, including philosophy of religion, metaphysics and epistemology.

While at the Capstone, Hudson will also present two lectures in the department of philosophy, one on the philosophy of religion and another on personal identity and the philosophy of time.

Hudson’s lectures, along with the others in the series, are intended for audiences with little to no background in formal philosophy.

The third speaker in the series is Dr. Rebecca Copenhaver of Lewis and Clark College, who will speak on “Anti-Intellectualism and the Academy in American Life” March 6 at 7:30 p.m. in room 205 Smith Hall.

The University of Alabama’s department of philosophy is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the college have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Team.
