SAFETY

UA has established a 24-hour HALT hotline to allow students, parents or others to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, hazing or any kind of unhealthy behavior. An individual calling the hotline can leave a confidential message with the Office of the Dean of Students. Callers to the hotline are anonymous. Callers should include as much detailed information as possible. The hotline number is 205-348-4258 (HALT).

The University conducted a test of its emergency-notification system, UA Alerts, on Oct. 5. Students who did not receive notification vial email, telephone and SMS text messaging should log in to myBama and make changes in the Student Self-Service area. A student’s cellphone number should be the primary contact number Click here to view a video of instructions for updating information.

To prepare for the possibility of severe weather on campus, UA faculty, staff and students should locate the storm-shelter site for each building where they work and have classes. The location is noted on the evacuation map posted on the wall within each building near the main entryway or stairwell.

For evacuation purposes, the maps are located on each floor, but the shelter location will be found on the map on the lower level of each building. Typically, the shelter site is located on the lower level of the building.

For a list of shelter locations for most buildings on campus, visit http://prepare.ua.edu/?page_id=85. Look for shelter sites near the bottom of the page.

In the event of severe weather while off campus, homeowners should identify the safest locations in their homes. People living in off-campus rental housing should check with their property owners for suggested locations on the property.

Other recommendations on shelter and home safety during severe weather can be found at the following websites: http://www.fema.gov/areyouready/tornadoes.shtm and http://www.srh.noaa.gov/oun/?n=safety-severe-homesafety.
