TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The National Society of Collegiate Scholars has named The University of Alabama chapter a recipient of its 2011 Platinum Award, the organization’s top honor to recognize continuous excellence.

“This is the first time the UA chapter has won the Platinum Award and that makes it truly an honor to receive,” said Marilyn Pinson, president of UA’s NSCS chapter. “We couldn’t have done it without our hard working, conscientious members, adviser Stacy Jones, and our executive board.”

The UA chapter of NSCS has 2,210 members, including some 671 new members. NSCS is an honors organization for high achieving first- and second-year students with more than 300 student-run chapters at universities across the country. The UA NSCS chapter was founded in 1999.

“We are extremely proud of our platinum chapters,” said Janine Deegan, manager of branding and campus outreach at NSCS headquarters. “They are our shining stars and the chapters we hope all others will strive to emulate. The University of Alabama is an amazing chapter and has truly embraced the NSCS ideals of scholarship, leadership and service.”

NSCS chapters can attain one of four star status levels – bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Each level is determined based on the quantity and quality of events a chapter held the previous year. The UA NSCS chapter also received the Gold Star Award.  Chapters are required to hold an induction ceremony for new members, create a student mentoring program, hold campuswide events to support the NSCS integrity initiative, create a membership recruitment campaign and engage a campus office in a chapter event.
