TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — “Black and White in Crimson: A Symposium on Race and Sports,” presented by The University of Alabama’s department of history, the Friends of History and the Paul W. Bryant Museum, will be Thursday, Nov. 3, and Friday, Nov. 4 at the Hotel Capstone on the UA campus.
The events are free and open to the public.
The symposium marks the 40th anniversary of the official integration of the football team. At 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3, Dr. Andrew Doyle, associate professor of history at Winthrop University, will deliver the keynote address, ”A Cautious Revolution: The Desegregation of Intercollegiate Athletics in the Southeastern Conference,” in the Bagby/Fitzpatrick Room in the Hotel Capstone.
On Nov. 4, Dr. John David Briley, associate professor of history at East Tennessee State University, will moderate a panel discussion at 10 a.m. in the Bagby/Fitzpatrick Room. The panel will feature former UA basketball coach C. M. Newton; women’s basketball coach and former UA basketball player Wendell Hudson; former football players Walter Lewis, Andrew Pernell and Dr. Kelvin Croom; and former UA cheerleader Brenda Lyons.
“We thought this would be a good opportunity to talk with some former athletes and coaches about the early years of integrated athletics at The University of Alabama and about how those experiences have shaped who they are today,” said Dr. Kari Frederickson, professor and chair of UA’s history department.
