Art Exhibit ‘Impressions’ Opens Season at UA’s Moody Gallery

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The exhibit “Deep Impressions: Willie Cole Works on Paper” will open the 2011-2012 season at The University of Alabama’s Sarah Moody Gallery.

The show runs from Thursday, Aug. 25, to Thursday, Oct. 6.

Cole will speak about his work at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 205 Smith Hall on the UA campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Cole is best known for transforming common domestic objects into fine art. The show includes his work from 1984 to 2010. His work reflects “the harsh realities of inner-city life for African-Americans” as well as “finding ways to combine the religious and spiritual traditions of Africa and Asia with his personal history,” says curator Patterson Sims.

This exhibit covers familiar motifs in Cole’s work, including steam irons, iron scorches and high-heeled shoes. Cole’s work is part of many public and private collections and museums, including the Birmingham Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; the High Museum in Atlanta; and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is supported by the College of Arts and Sciences and the department of art and art history. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in 103 Garland Hall in the heart of the UA campus on Woods Quad. Admission is free.
