UA students can complete a five-minute survey to provide input regarding the update of the Campus Housing Master Plan. Click here to take the survey before the April 17 deadline.
 

STUDENT AFFAIRS

The Student Government Association is recruiting new directors for the upcoming school year. Among the positions are those in event planning, policy creation and graphic design. Applications are online at http://sga.ua.edu or in the SGA office at 356 Ferguson Student Center. A large banner will be on the Quad in front of Gorgas Library for UA students to sign in support of the Student Government Association Lobby Boards to fund higher education. The banner will be mailed to local representatives to encourage more funding and opportunities for students at UA. More information: Chip Harrison.
 
The individual events team of the Alabama Forensic Council will hold open auditions for new members on April 15, 8-11 a.m. and 2-7 p.m., in 222 Reese Phifer Hall. Each student should be prepared to make a speech or presentation he or she has done in the past or present a reading of literature. Each audition is five minutes maximum. Interested students may visit 210-A Reese Phifer Hall before April 14 to register. More information: Frank Thompson. 
Students who want to participate in a 30-day, tobacco-free challenge during April can contact the health promotion and wellness department at the Student Health Center at 348-3878 or health@ua.edu.
 
UA considers the safety of its students one of its highest priorities. And one way students can stay safe is to use the buddy system at night: Be sure to walk in groups in well-lighted areas. For additional safety procedures and services, read the Safer Living Guide at the UA Police Department website.
 
“The Hog: A Health Blog” is a new community-oriented health blog provided by the Health Sciences Library at UA. The Hog is located at http://healthblog.ua.edu.
 

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Art to Life is a service-learning course in the Honors College. Students interested in storytelling, art therapy, video production or Alzheimer’s research have an opportunity to contribute to the quality of life for dementia patients and their caregivers. Students will piece together a patient’s life story through interviews, family albums and other materials to produce a DVD that will continue the patient’s therapy. Students receive 3-4 credit hours and may volunteer in Tuscaloosa or Marion, Ala. More information: Meg McCrummen.
 
Students staying in Tuscaloosa or going home to the Birmingham or Huntsville areas this summer can earn honors credit through the CollegeFirst Summer Academic Institute. Registered students will learn how to be pre-advancement placement instructors and tutors in biology, calculus or chemistry. They will then tutor high school students planning to take AP courses. UA students can teach chess in local elementary and middle schools while studying the academic and social benefits the game holds for children. “Every Move Counts: A Chess in Education Project” is an initiative of UA’s Center for Ethics & Social Responsibility. EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

The Student Executive Council of the College of Communication and Information Sciences will host its annual “Students Helping Students” silent auction to raise money for book scholarships. The auction will be held on April 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the rotunda of Reese Phifer Hall. Items to be auctioned include a football autographed by Nick Saban, a basketball autographed by Anthony Grant and gift cards. More information: Margaret Bishop.
 
The UA Department of Theatre and Dance will present “The Baby Dance” and “Big River.” “The Baby Dance” will be held April 14-16 at 7:30 p.m. and April 17 at 2 p.m. at Allen Bales Theatre. “Big River” will be held April 18-23 at 7:30 p.m. and April 24 at 2 p.m. at Marian Gallaway Theatre.
 
The “Ask Me Why I Wear Teal” sticker campaign to promote discussion and awareness of sexual assault ends April 15. Students can pick up stickers at the Women’s Resource Center or the department of gender and race studies in 104 Manly Hall. More information: Maria Perez-Fisher.
 
Apwonjo is hosting “Please Don’t Stop the Music” at the Student Recreation Center on April 16. Andrew Briggs, founder of Freedom In Creation, will speak at 8 p.m. A dance party will be from 8:30 p.m. until 1 a.m. Registration costs are $15 per team member or $20 per individual. Reanae McNeal will perform her original one-woman play, “Don’t Speak My Mother’s Name in Vain,” on April 18 at 6 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center ballroom. The play explores the issues of sexual assault and rape of African-American women. The event is co-sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center, Ferguson Student Center and Office of the Dean of Students. McNeal premiered the show at the National Coalition Against Rape and Sexual Assault Conference and has since performed it at numerous college campuses. The show is free. The UA Honors College and Housing and Residential Communities will host Ken Rudin, political editor for National Public Radio, on April 19 at 6 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. Rudin has analyzed every congressional race in the nation since 1984 and currently writes the “Political Junkie” blog on NPR.org. More information: Marion Steinfels.
 
Sustainability Day will be held April 19. Several activities and demonstrations will be held on the Quad and inside the Ferguson Student Center. Students can learn about the University’s sustainability efforts and how they can contribute. More information: Lauren Hammonds.
 
A “Take Back the Night” march and rally will be held April 19 at 6 p.m. at the Crimson Promenade to support the end of violence against women. The Women’s Resource Center and Alpha Chi Omega sorority are sponsoring the event. Performer Reanae McNeal will be the keynote speaker. The department of art and art history‘s annual “BFA Juried Exhibition” runs through April 25. The exhibit is located at the Harrison Galleries at 2315 University Blvd., downtown Tuscaloosa. Exhibitors are Jacob Davidson, Sarah Anne Finley, Clinton Graham, Adam Hill, Brooke Howell, Amber Jones, Yimin Li, Julie Miller, Ethan Murray and Joe Robertson.
 
Alabama Arts for AIDS will be held April 26 in Morgan Auditorium. The concert features an hour of song and dance and is produced by the student-outreach group (Celebration!) in the department of theatre and dance. More information: Laura Ballard Laura Ballard.
 
Graduate Parent Support is hosting a Summer Camp Expo at the softball fields and tennis courts on April 29 for students who are parents and for families in the Tuscaloosa community. Students who are part of GPS can watch a softball game and have a free picnic after the expo. More information: Cori Perdue.
 
The Every Woman Book Club will meet at noon on April 28 at the University Club to discuss “Commencement” by J. Courtney Sullivan. Click here for more information and to make reservations.
 
The UA-Japan fundraising group is collecting money to assist the victims of the March 11 earthquake/tsunami that struck Japan. The organization has set up a table in the Ferguson Student Center and will continue to collect funds through April 15.
