Nursing Doctoral Students from UA, UAB and UAH Gather in Tuscaloosa for Two-Day Intensive Seminar

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Almost 140 nursing doctoral students from The University of Alabama, University of Alabama at Birmingham and University of Alabama in Huntsville will be in Tuscaloosa April 13-15 for a two-day joint doctoral nursing program intensive seminar.

The seminar agenda includes workshops, poster presentations and lectures from national speakers, mainly focusing on diversity in the nursing workforce. The first keynote speech on Thursday, April 14 at 8 a.m. is “Building Diversity in the Healthcare Workforce” by Dr. Beverly Malone, chief executive officer for the National League of Nursing.

“Diversity in the nursing workforce is critical for caring for diverse populations of our country today,” said Dr. Marietta Stanton, professor and director of the graduate program at UA. “It’s important that our future nurses have an in-depth understanding and insight into various cultures. We want the workforce to mirror the composition of the nation.”

This marks the third year the three nursing programs have held this joint intensive, and the first in Tuscaloosa. In anticipation of the need for nurses prepared at the highest level of clinical practice, the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program degree began in 2008 through collaboration with The University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing, UAB’s School of Health Professions and the University of Alabama in Huntsville College of Nursing.

A reception at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13 at the new Malone-Hood Plaza will kick off the program.
