UA Engineering Professor Named TMS President

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Garry W. Warren, professor of metallurgical and materials engineering at The University of Alabama, has been named president of TMS, The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.

Warren has been an active TMS member for more than 30 years, serving as director of publications, financial planning officer, member of the executive committee and vice president. He also served for a number of years as the faculty adviser for UA’s Materials Advantage Student Chapter, which received five Chapter of Excellence Awards.

Warren has received several honors and awards throughout his career, including the Outstanding Professor Award in 1988 from the student chapter of AFS-the American Foundry Society, the TMS Distinguished Service Award in 1998, and the TMS Structural Materials Division Education Resource Award in 2007.

Warren joined UA’s department of metallurgical and materials engineering in 1986 after teaching at Carnegie Mellon University. Warren’s research focuses on electrochemistry, corrosion and hydrometallurgy, and he has published more than 80 papers.

Warren received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in metallurgical engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso and worked in the steel industry in Texas for several years before earning his doctorate from the University of Utah.

TMS is an international organization founded in 1957 with more than 11,000 professional and student members from industry, academia and national laboratories. The mission of TMS is to promote the global science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals and materials. It organizes many conferences which provide important opportunities for networking and information exchange, awards numerous scholarships, and emphasizes the role that materials play in providing solutions to global problems.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has more than 2,700 students and more than 100 faculty. In the last eight years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
