Student Government Association homecoming director applications are available at the SGA website and are due Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. in the SGA office. More information: Katie Mellown.

Honor society applications for Lambda Sigma, Cardinal Key, Blue Key, Omicron Delta Kappa, Mortar Board and Anderson Society, as well as individual outstanding awards, are due Feb. 6. More information: Taylor Scruggs.

Cultivate Peer Mentors are accepting applications for fall 2011. Cultivate mentors are campus leaders matched with Freshman Learning Communities and Compass courses. Mentors assist freshmen with their transition to campus. Mentors are selected from a variety of academic disciplines, backgrounds and campus experiences. Current freshmen, sophomores and juniors can apply. Training occurs during the spring semester; selected students will serve as mentors in the fall semester. Mentors will also have the opportunity to gain course credit and community service hours. The deadline to return applications is Feb. 8. UA is one of 20 colleges from across the nation and Jamaica that will host “Elect Her: Campus Women Win,” a unique program that teaches women how to run for campus-based elective office. A total of 50 people will be selected to participate. Click here for more information and to apply. Applications are due Jan. 28 by noon. Training is scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Feb. 12. Creative Campus is hosting the first UA Sketchbook Project. Students, faculty and staff are invited to fill sketchbooks with poetry, drawings, paintings, collages or whatever they like. The completed sketchbooks will be collected in the spring and exhibited in conjunction with the Druid City Arts Festival. To participate and receive a sketchbook, send name and contact information to UAsketchbook@gmail.com by Jan. 31. Creative Campus plans to conduct the sketchbook project annually.

Artists and musicians can participate in the Druid City Arts Festival by completing one of the application forms found at UA’s Creative Campus website. Registration deadline is Jan. 28. The festival will be held on March 26 in downtown Tuscaloosa.

The Women’s Resource Center is seeking student writers to help with the spring 2011 edition of Our Voice newsletter. Journalism majors can come to a planning meeting at the center on Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. Story assignments, deadlines and themes will be discussed. Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 11 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their work before judges. To participate, undergraduate students must register their projects by submitting application forms and abstracts describing their projects by March 7. Capstone International Academic Programs is accepting study-abroad applications for 2011 faculty-led summer programs. Find application and program information online or visit Capstone International at 135 B.B. Comer Hall.

Student-employee W-2 forms will be sent by Jan. 31. The forms will be mailed to the addresses that were listed in myBama as of Jan. 21. Students who do not receive their forms should contact the Human Resources Service Center at 348-7732.

Students interested in off-campus work-study, Service Learning Pro community-service hours or volunteer opportunities can contact the Humane Society of West Alabama.

Students can visit the Student Health Center to receive flu vaccinations. The center has recently treated a few cases of the flu. More information: David Wilkins at 348-0108.

To keep students informed if severe weather or an emergency occurs on campus, the University uses UA Alerts to simultaneously send voice calls and text messages to cell phones and e-mails to myBama and Crimson e-mail accounts. In an emergency, an e-mail will be sent to a student’s myBama account. Students should make sure that their contact information on myBama is updated. Students who do not check their myBama e-mail accounts need to turn on e-mail forwarding. Students can find directions for doing this under the Student Tab on myBama. To view and make changes to their information online, students can log into their myBama accounts at http://mybama.ua.edu. EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

Students with an interest in law school can speak with law-school representatives and obtain information about schools from across the country at the Law School Fair on Jan. 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center Ballroom. Women in Prison Awareness Week continues through Jan. 28. The UA community will have the opportunity to participate in a letter-writing campaign to incarcerated women, a toiletry and purse collection, a panel discussion and a visit to a women’s prison. Entries for the fifth annual book-collecting contest sponsored by UA Libraries are due on March 25 by 5 p.m. More information: http://www.lib.ua.edu/mystuff.

The Every Woman Book Club will hold its first meeting of the year on Jan. 27 at noon at the University Club to discuss Diana Craig Bibb’s new novel, “Goodwin Girls.” Bibb is a member of the book club. Make reservations at kechols@sa.ua.edu. Cost is $11.83 in exact cash or check (dessert is extra).

MathWorks will present a free MATLAB seminar on Feb. 9 in 205 Gorgas Library. Eric Johnson, MathWorks application engineer, will conduct two sessions, one beginning at 9 a.m. and the second at 1:30 p.m. The first session will be an introduction to MATLAB; the second session will cover the more advanced topics of speeding up applications and parallel computing with MATLAB. The Student Recreation Center will host a Polar Bear Plunge benefit on Feb. 12 at the outdoor pool complex. Cost is $5 for early registration and $10 on the day of the event. Heated locker rooms and showers are provided on-site, as well as hot chocolate for all participants. The first 50 individuals to register will receive a free coffee mug. UA Sports Clubs and Housing and Residential Communities will host the Holiday Hustle 5K Race on March 5 at 9 a.m. Volunteers are needed to help with checkpoints, water stations, registration tables, timing, running and calling. Contact uasportclubs@gmail.com if interested.
