Students are invited to a panel discussion about the events leading to the desegregation of the University on Nov. 3 at 9 a.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom. The event is one of many scheduled throughout the day as part of the dedication of the Autherine Lucy Clock Tower and the Malone-Hood Plaza. All events honor Autherine Lucy Foster, James Hood and the late Vivian Malone Jones, the three African-American students whose enrollment represented the University’s first steps toward desegregation. During the panel discussion, Foster, Hood and a family member of the late Jones will discuss UA’s early movement toward desegregation. Dr. E. Culpepper Clark, former dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences and author of the book, “The Schoolhouse Door: Segregation’s Last Stand at The University of Alabama,” will moderate. Students can submit questions to kknox-hall@sa.ua.edu by Nov. 1 for potential inclusion in the discussion. Click here for free tickets. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will visit campus Nov. 4. Her visit, hosted by UA’s Blackburn Institute, will focus on her new book, “Extraordinary, Ordinary People: A Memoir of Family.” Rice will participate in a conversation with the UA and Stillman College communities in the Ferguson Center Theater from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. She will sign copies of her book from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the newly renovated lobby of Foster Auditorium. Click here for complete information.

The deadline to apply for Career Connection is Nov. 1. Career Connection is a program developed through UA’s Professional Staff Assembly to connect students with UA professionals who hold similar career interests. Through this initiative, students can develop a relationship with a UA professional and participate in a short-term job-shadowing process. Students and professionals will be matched according to the student’s field of study and the professional’s area of knowledge. Click here for an application. The Student Health Center will deliver flu shots to UA students at the following times and locations: Nov. 3, Mary Burke Hall, noon-4 p.m.; Nov. 10, Rose Towers, noon-4 p.m.; and Nov. 17, Tutwiler Hall, noon-4 p.m. Cost is $20 and will be applied to a student’s University account. No payment is accepted on-site. SHC is also administering flu shots at the Student Health Center each Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and on Fridays, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary. The Student Government Association and the Parent’s Association are sponsoring bus transportation to and from the Alabama vs. LSU football game on Nov. 6. Student tickets for “Ride with the Tide” are $45 and will cover a day of activities. Charter buses will leave Tuscaloosa the day of the game and transport students to an SGA-sponsored tailgate in Baton Rouge, La., that will include free food and televisions to view all games. Buses will travel back to Tuscaloosa immediately following the game. Students can purchase tickets individually or in groups. Groups may also purchase blocks of seating. “Rock the Runway,” an annual fashion show hosted by and the department of clothing, textiles and interior design, and Fashion Inc. will be held today at 7:30 p.m. in the Bryant Conference Center. More information: Liz Lane at 205-792-1742.

The EveryWoman Book Club will discuss “If I Am Missing Or Dead” by Janine Latus Oct. 27 at noon at the University Club to recognize Dating/Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Provost Judy Bonner and Vice Provost Mark Nelson invite students to bring their lunches and join them for an open-ended discussion at noon on Nov. 10 in 358 Ferguson Student Center (Sparkman Room).

Phi Sigma Pi national co-ed honors fraternity is collecting toiletries and beauty products throughout October for a local women’s shelter. Travel-size toiletries are acceptable. More information: Samantha Silor.

Dr. Jo Anne Engelbert, literary translator and educator, will be speak at the first Alabama Modern Language Conference on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Heritage Room. A group of social work students are collecting gently used coats in Little Hall through Nov. 2. The coats will be distributed to area residents in need of coats. More information: Amber Bell.

Intercollegiate Athletics conducts tours of Bryant-Denny Stadium Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. and noon. Tours are unavailable during University holidays or on Fridays prior to home football games. Tours are $5 per person. Children under the age of 1 year are admitted free.
