ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Student Government Association continues to work with the athletics department to develop the process that will be used for the sale of student football tickets for the 2010 season. Details and dates will be announced in UA Student News when plans are finalized.

Honors Week is April 5-9. The University will recognize the achievement of outstanding students and faculty during 2010 Honors Week activities. The Tapping on the Mound ceremony will be held Friday, April 9, at 1:30 p.m. on the Mound at the west side of the UA Quad (rain location will be Moody Music Concert Hall). Campuswide honoraries Omicron Delta Kappa, Mortar Board, Blue Key National Honor Society and Anderson Society will induct new members at this time.

Parking registration 2010-11 is now open to all students. For detailed information about parking registration and changes, including some zone changes, for the coming year, visit http://www.bamaparking.ua.edu/pages/permit-reg.htm.

What do you think about alcohol on UA’s campus? Dr. Lance Kinney, associate professor of advertising and public relations, is surveying UA students to see what you think about UA’s alcohol policies and other alcohol issues. There are no questions about personal alcohol use and everything is anonymous. Click here to respond to the survey.

The outdoor pool at the Student Recreation Center is now open from noon to 7 p.m. each day. Students must have a valid Action Card to enter.

Summer housing applications are now available on myBama. All students are eligible to live on campus during the summer as long as they are enrolled for the fall. Students do not need to be enrolled in summer classes to live on campus. More information: Housing and Residential Communities at 348-6676.

Information tables for the 30-Day Tobacco-Free Challenge will be at the Ferguson Student Center on Monday, April 12, and Monday, April 19, from noon to 2 p.m. and at the Student Recreation Center on Friday, April 16, from noon to 2 p.m. In 30 days you could reduce your risk of cancer and heart and lung diseases by joining with the tobacco-free challenge. Come by the Ferguson Student Center for more information and to pick up your “How to Quit Kit.”

Registration for the fall Get On Board day has started early. Departments can register via e-mail to Alex Karagas. Organizations can register via myBama at SOURCE, which can be accessed by clicking on the “Campus Life” tab. Under their profiles, organizations should click on “Tools” then “Forms.” Priority registration deadline is May 7 at 4:45 p.m., with cost being $15 per organization and $20 per department. The official deadline is Aug. 20 at 4:45 p.m., with cost being $20 per organization and $25 per department. Payment must be made at 355 Ferguson Student Center (Student Involvement and Leadership). Cultivate Peer Mentor applications are being accepted. The organization is devoted to the development of freshmen at UA. Mentors should be knowledgeable about the University and enthusiastic about helping younger students succeed. Mentors will have monthly meetings and meet regularly with freshmen. Capstone International is accepting applications for the global studies certificate program, which requires 15 credit hours to complete. Undergraduates will achieve a greater global perspective and awareness through a variety of international studies courses. EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

The Brown Bag Lecture series will continue as two women’s studies graduate students lead separate discussions about losing identity during pregnancy and the evolution of Creole identity on April 7 at 12:30 p.m. in 308 Manly Hall. More information: Kristen Robinson.

The English Graduate Organization will sell paperbacks for 50 cents, hard covers for $1 or $2 and baked goods for $1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 7 in front of Morgan Hall. Profits will help fund English graduate students in their academic and professional pursuits. Cash accepted.

Dr. Julie Hedgepeth Williams will present a lecture on her new book, “Wings of Opportunity: The Wright Brothers in Montgomery, Alabama,” on April 8 at 3 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. The book chronicles the short life of the first civilian American flight school, which the Wright brothers established in Montgomery in 1910. Williams is a doctoral graduate of UA’s College of Communication and Information Sciences and a professor of journalism at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. Please join Dr. Mark Nelson, vice president for student affairs and vice provost, for the Academic Honor Council induction ceremony on April 8 at 5 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center Ballroom at 5 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.

The inaugural Low-Country Boil will be held April 8 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Delta Sigma Phi house. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the event or from a member of Delta Sigma Phi, Alpha Omicron Pi or Alpha Kappa Lambda. Curt Ford will provide entertainment. More information: Ely Jones.

UA alumnus Joe Scarborough, co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” will sign his latest book, “The Last Best Hope” in the rotunda of Reese Phifer Hall on Friday, April 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. His “Morning Joe” co-host, Mika Brzezinski, will also be present to promote her book “All at Once.” Both books are available for purchase at the Supe Store.

The UA chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will hold its annual Image Awards on April 11 in 205 Gorgas Library at 6:30 p.m. The awards honor some of UA’s finest students, groups and faculty members. More information: Amber Parker.

“Uncommon Courage: A Refugee’s Story” will be held April 13. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Quad, three tents will showcase interactive displays of the experience of becoming and being a refugee from Darfur, the resilience of the people forced into refugee camps and the recovery process of rebuilding a life shattered by war and displacement from home. At 6:30 p.m. in 227 Gallalee Hall, El-Fadel Arbab, a Fur tribe refugee whose village in Darfur was attacked by the Janjaweed when he was 12, will speak about his personal experiences. Robyn Ochs will present two lectures on April 13 in 205 Gorgas Library — “Beyond Binaries: Identity and Sexuality Specturm,” 3:30 p.m.; and “Imagining Our Lives,” 7 p.m. Ochs is a national and international bisexual activist and author. More information: Jessi at jlhitchins@sa.ua.edu.

The University will hold its annual A-Day Game to conclude spring football practice on Saturday, April 17, at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Admission will be free with the kickoff set for 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN. Gates will open at 11 a.m., and a legends flag football game will be at noon. Bags will be checked upon entrance to Bryant-Denny Stadium, and no outside food or drinks will be allowed. All concession stands and seating sections will be open. Carter Hamric will present a free concert for students and fans before the game. He will perform on the grass triangle area on the corner of University Boulevard and Stadium Drive to the east of the DKE house and south of Bruno Library. The Intercultural Council will sponsor Crimson Culture Week, April 19-24. The mission of Crimson Culture Week is to celebrate the range of cultures that is UA and give voice to the diverse experiences of the Capstone community. More information: http://crimsoncultureweek.com.

The individual events team portion of the Alabama Forensic Council will hold open auditions for new members on Thursday, April 22, from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday, April 23, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in 226 Reese Phifer Hall. The team ranks in the top 10 programs in the country. Interested students should register for an audition time at 210-A Reese Phifer Hall before April 22. For the audition, students should be prepared to present a reading of literature or make a speech or presentation they have done in the past. A Wilderness First Responder course will be held at the Student Recreation Center May 17–27. Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities provides a definitive course in medical training for outdoor educators, guides, and search and rescue teams. The course will teach all of the essential skills required to assess and manage medical problems in the backcountry. More information: Lance Haynie at 348-4701.
