TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s department of theatre and dance presents the classic musical “Candide,” with music by Leonard Bernstein, from Tuesday, April 20, to Sunday, April 25, in Morgan Auditorium on Stadium Drive in the UA Theatre District.
Based on the scandalous novella by Voltaire, this effervescent operetta is renowned for the opportunities it offers to singers with its colorful and varied score. Add a few more tweaks by lyricists Richard Wilbur and Stephen Sondheim, and the classic tale is transformed into what has become an enormously popular modern piece of satire.
Join Candide as he makes his way out of an Edenic paradise into the harsh realities of the world beyond, where with humor and directness he contends with the age-old problem of evil by taking on religion, government, philosophies and — most of all — optimism.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The department of theatre and dance is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Team.
