UA’s Sarah Moody Gallery Presents Prints by Jasper Johns

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Sarah Moody Gallery of Art presents a selection of prints by Jasper Johns for its annual Farley Moody Galbraith Endowed Exhibition.

An opening reception for the show will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25.

More than 20 of his works are on loan from the Walker Arts Center’s Permanent Collection; they date from 1960 to 1998.

Johns is an American artist and native of South Carolina who is widely acclaimed for his accomplishments in painting and performance art. He emerged on the New York scene in the early 1960s alongside Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage and Merce Cunningham.

Through painting, sculpture and graphics, Johns introduced commonplace subject matter into an abstract painting vocabulary. His integration of accessible images such as flags, targets, letters and numbers into an inventive artistic language provided him a significant base from which he would produce art work for several decades.

The exhibit, which runs through Friday, April 9, is made possible by the support of the Farley Moody Galbraith Endowed Exhibition Fund. For more information, phone the gallery at 205/348-1891, or go to the gallery’s Web site. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

The department of art and art history is a part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Team.
