TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — More than 35 MBA students from the Manderson Graduate School at The University of Alabama are registered to run in the Mercedes-Benz Marathon Weekend in Birmingham Feb. 12-14.

Another 10 MBA students have volunteered to aid in operations on race day.

The Mercedes-Benz Marathon Weekend has established a reputation as one of the most hospitable and enjoyable marathons in the country and each year draws people of all ages and running abilities to the many activities and races.

The MBA contingent is participating under the TeamManderson banner and is sponsored by Big Sky Bread Co. and the MBA Association.

The marathon begins at 7:03 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 14 in front of Boutwell Auditorium in downtown Birmingham.

Now in its ninth year, the Mercedes Marathon weekend of events has become a Birmingham tradition. The event has helped to raise more than $1.5 million for local charities. The 2009 event included more than 9,000 runners and walkers of all ages, shapes and sizes and was used by participants to raise a record $534,000.

“This is one of many ways MBA students can take on roles as leaders of the business school by practicing social responsibility and showing dedication in giving back to the community,” said David Drummond, an MBA student and the organizer of the MBA race team. “As students, we realize numerous scholarships, our nationally ranked business faculty, administration, and facilities would not be possible without the help of the alumni and corporate partners of the business school, and we hope this gesture is received as a show of appreciation to all of those who make these things possible.”
