Expert in Youth Anxiety to Speak at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Philip C. Kendall, director of the Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic at Temple University, will be the guest speaker for the annual Michael Dinoff Memorial Lecture on The University of Alabama campus.

The free lecture is at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 26, in room 208 of Gordon Palmer Hall.

The topic will be “What We Know and What We Don’t Yet Know About Treating Anxiety in Youth.”

Kendall, the Laura H. Carnell professor of psychology at Temple University, received his doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1977 and has published more than 400 articles and chapters, including more than 30 books and more than 20 treatment manuals and workbooks. He has contributed as a basic scientist, theorist, teacher, administrative leader and public intellectual. His contributions include work in the treatment of anxiety disorders in youth and in cognitive-behavioral theory.

Kendall was named a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and received the first Research Recognition Award from the Anxiety Disorders Association of America. He also has been identified as a “top therapist” in the tri-state area by Philadelphia Magazine. He has served as president of the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (division 53) of the American Psychological Association as well as president of the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy.

The Dinoff Memorial Lecture is given in memory of Dr. Michael Dinoff, who was a professor and director of the University’s Psychological Clinic from 1963 until his death in 1982.

The psychology department is a part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Teams.
