UA Student Places Among Best in National Hearst Journalism Competition

University of Alabama senior Daniel Cherry, a telecommunication and film and political science major, placed seventh in the radio news category in the annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program for two of his pieces produced for Alabama Public Radio.

Dr. Glenda Williams, associate professor of telecommunication and film in the UA College of Communication and Information Sciences, was elected president of the Broadcast Education Association.

From Mentor to MD, UA Student’s Volunteer Work Inspires a Career Path

UA student Katie McMurray has 20 young friends who eagerly await her company every Friday afternoon. These 11-year-olds are not her college friends, but McMurray hopes they will attend one day. McMurray is mentoring the youngsters at Matthew’s Elementary School as part of a service learning class at UA. Recently, McMurray was accepted into medical school where she plans to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a pediatrician and continuing her work with children.

UA Community Service Center to Host National Volunteer Week

The University of Alabama Community Service Center will be hosting National Volunteer Week and providing service opportunities for faculty, staff and students. Volunteers are asked to sign up at the Community Service Center in 345 Ferguson Center or at Earth Fest on Sunday, April 19, on the Quad at the CSC table from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Day of Silence to be Held at UA April 17

As part of the national Day of Silence, a Breaking the Silence event will be held in the Ferguson Center lounge on The University of Alabama campus April 17 at 5 p.m.

Noel Jordan, a student at The University of Alabama from Mt. Brook, has received the Marshall Award for being selected UA’s top Army ROTC cadet for this academic year. As part of the honor, Jordan is participating in the George C. Marshall ROTC Awards Seminar April 15-17 in Lexington, Va.
