EVENTS, ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

SGA Town Hall Meeting on student tickets will be Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in Graves Hall Auditorium. While the meeting’s specific topic is student tickets, any questions or concerns about anything happening on campus will be welcome. More information: SGA at 348-2742.

Stand Up for Mental Health: Comedy for a Cause will be Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theatre. Alex and Kim of Stand Up for Mental Health will be performing comedy routines focusing on mental health and recovery from related problems. Stand Up is from Canada, has performed across the country, and has won many accolades. More information: Jen Turner at 348-3863.

African-American Heritage Month Read-In. The Women’s Resource Center, Pi Beta Phi and Delta Sigma Theta will sponsor the annual African-American Heritage Month Read-In, Monday, Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m. in 232 Ferguson (Crossroads Community Center lounge). Khaled Abu Toameh will speak Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in 300 Ferguson Center. Toameh is an award-winning Israeli-Arab journalist who has reported on the West Bank and Gaza Strip for more than 20 years. He has an insider’s knowledge of the workings of the Palestinian Authority and has built a reputation for unique and brave reporting. Come hear about the events occurring in Israel. African-American scholar and author Jerry W. Ward, Jr. will be on campus Feb. 4-5. Ward will read from his book The Katrina Papers: A Journal of Trauma and Recovery at 4 p.m., Feb. 4 in 205 Gorgas. Also, a photography exhibit of images captured by Brice Miller, assistant director of Crossroads Community Center, upon his return to New Orleans after Katrina will be on display in Maxwell Hall during Ward’s visit. Ward and Miller will share personal reflections from Katrina at noon on Feb. 5 in 301 Morgan. The event is sponsored by Creative Campus Initiative, University Libraries, New College, Crossroads Community Center, the African American Studies Program, and the Bankhead Visiting Writers Series. Capstone International Coffee Hour. Capstone International Center (CIC) invites faculty, staff and students to Capstone International Coffee Hour, Friday, Jan. 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 121 B.B. Comer Hall. Coffee Hour will be sponsored by the Alabama International Connection.

Higher Education Day will be held March 5 in Montgomery. This event provides students with the opportunity to show unity among all 13 public universities throughout the state of Alabama and to contact the state legislature directly. Students will need to register in the SGA Office on or before Feb. 24. Buses will leave at 7 a.m. from the soccer field parking lots on the east side of campus on March 5. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

UA Honor Society applications are now available. Students interested in membership into the various student honoraries can visit the Coordinating Council for Honor Societies (CCHS) Web site to gain access to the online application. Writing Center Workshop Series. If you need help with MLA style, APA style or grammar and punctuation workshops are available to help you master these important skills. All sessions run on Fridays from 3–4 p.m. in the Writing Center, 121 Wilson. Sessions will feature a mix of lecture, discussion and writing. No appointments required. STUDENT AFFAIRS

Water outage planned for the morning of Jan. 31. There will be a water outage on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 5-11 a.m. affecting the following buildings: Mary Burke, Martha Parham, Tutwiler and the sorority housed on Magnolia Drive. This will likely affect food service in Burke Commons for breakfast and lunch. More information: Ben Henson at 348-6831.

Recontracting for Campus Housing. The online housing application for fall 2009 is now available. Students living on campus who want to return to campus housing next fall must recontract before Feb. 1. More information: 348-6676.

Looking for an internship in Washington D.C.? Come meet with Dr. Michael New on Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in 336 Ferguson Center to learn more about opportunities available through the Washington Experience program. All majors are welcome. More information: Tiffany Goodin at 348-5848.

Nominations for the 2009 Last Lecture Award sponsored by the Graduate School will open on Jan. 27. Both undergraduate and graduate students as well as alumni are invited to nominate the faculty member from whom they would most like to hear a lecture delivered on this premise: “If this were your last chance to talk to a group of UA students, what would you say to them?” Students and alumni are invited to submit their nomination by completing the online form.
