ANNOUNCEMENTS

H1N1 vaccine (injection and mist) is available for all students at the Student Health Center. Students with no major health problems such as diabetes or asthma can take the nasal mist and receive protection. Those with health problems such as diabetes or asthma require the injection form. Both forms are available at the Student Health Center by either walk-in or appointment (348-2778). Both will also be available at Tutwiler Hall on Wed., Dec 2, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The H1N1 vaccine is free of charge. More information: the Student Health Center Flu Hot Line at 348-9184.

ESPN’s College Gameday will broadcast live from Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, Ga., on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the SEC Championship Game. Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard will go on the air at 10 a.m. and SportsCenter will be aired at 9 a.m. Kickoff for the game between Alabama and Florida is 4 p.m. E.S.T.

On Dec. 3-4, the campus community should expect road closures, heavy traffic, longer food lines, adjusted parking areas and transportation delays. On those days, hundreds of guests will be on campus to attend the Alabama High School Athletic Association Super 6 championship games at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Road closures

  • Wallace Wade from Eighth Street south to Bryant Drive will close Wednesday, Dec. 2.
  • All vehicles parked on Wallace Wade must be cleared by 7 a.m. on Dec. 3.
  • All of Wallace Wade will close at 7 a.m. on Dec. 3 and remain closed until approximately midnight on Dec. 4.
  • Colonial Drive will be closed at 7 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3 through approximately midnight on Friday, Dec. 4. Vehicles parked on Colonial Drive may remain parked there; however, re-entry to Colonial will not be allowed.
  • Traffic will not be allowed to enter Colonial Drive or Wallace Wade from 7 a.m. on Dec. 3 to approximately midnight on Dec. 4.
  • Traffic entering Magnolia Drive from Bryant Drive must turn right between the Kappa Delta and Alpha Gamma Delta houses and continue around Rose Administration Building.

Crimson Ride
Due to road closures, Crimson Ride buses will be re-routed on certain south campus routes. Please check the Crimson Ride Web site, http://crimsonride.ua.edu, for details.

Parking
The following parking lots will be unavailable on Dec. 3 and 4:

  • Communications Card lot
  • Northwest Stadium Lot
  • Solomon’s Lot on Wallace Wade Avenue
  • Denny Court Lot on Wallace Wade Avenue
  • Eleventh Avenue Lot

Additional parking changes:

  • The Barnwell/Parham parking lots and the Burke/Sixth Avenue area will be reserved for faculty, staff and residential students. The iron gate at the Burke parking lot entrance off Hackberry Lane and the iron gate at the Parham West entrance off Bryant Drive will be closed Dec. 3 and 4.
  • The entrance to the Barnwell lot for faculty and staff (as well as residents) will be from Bryant Drive at Barnwell Hall.

Coach Nick Saban is up for Liberty Mutual’s Coach of the Year in an online fan contest. The coach who receives the most votes wins a $50,000 donation to his favorite charity and a $20,000 donation to his school’s alumni association for scholarships. This will be a great opportunity for Nick’s Kids and the Alabama Alumni Association. You can vote once a day at http://www.coachoftheyear.com/ through Dec. 6.

UA is soliciting feedback from the community on the concept of a plaza at Foster Auditorium that will be designed to commemorate the events surrounding the “Stand in the Schoolhouse Door.” Online comments can be made through Jan. 15, 2010, by visiting the UA Web site at http://www.ua.edu and clicking on “Foster Auditorium Plaza Renovation” under Quick Links at the bottom of the page. The Web site also offers an opportunity to share personal stories or memories of Foster Auditorium.

EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

Winter commencement ceremonies will be held Saturday, Dec. 12, in Coleman Coliseum at 9 a.m.

The next Brown Bag Lecture Series presentation, sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center and the department of women’s studies, will be held Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 12:30 p.m. in 308 Manly Hall. Dr. Ariane Prohaska, assistant professor of sociology, will lead a discussion on the motivations of “hogging,” a practice whereby men seek out women they deem unattractive or fat for sexual purposes. Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa party will benefit local family resource center. A “tacky” holiday party will be held Dec. 2 at 9:30 p.m. at Rounders on the Strip. Admission is one unwrapped new toy or $5, which will be donated to Tuscaloosa’s One Place to be distributed to local needy children. Dress is tacky holiday costumes. The Women’s Resource Center and the Career Center will host a Start Smart pay-equity workshop on Thursday, Dec. 3, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in 336 Ferguson Student Center. The WAGE project developed the Start Smart Campus Initiative to empower young women starting their careers to avoid the gender wage gap. The workshop is open to women of any age. Space is limited. Recent student artworks will be exhibited in the Sella-Granata Art Gallery in Woods Hall through Dec. 4. The exhibition is titled “Media Area: Painting and Drawing”. More information: Rachel Dobson.

Students of UA’s advanced television production course will host their television pilot premiere, titled “Cast and Crew,” at the Bama Theatre on Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be available. The Bama Theatre is located at 600 Greensboro Ave. Students in TCF 451 worked together over the course of the semester from story pitch to final production to create the first episode of a potential television series. The story unfolds in Tuscaloosa and revolves around a small television production crew. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

The Honors College announces the 2009 EBSCO Industries Scholarship Program for Honors College students. The scholarship awards range in value from $1,000 to $5,000 per year. The awards are offered for a maximum of eight semesters. To be eligible, a student must be a member in good standing in the Honors College. The criteria for selection are financial need, GPA, involvement, achievement, effort (such as employment) and a short essay. Application forms are available in Nott Hall and must be submitted to 289 Nott Hall by Dec. 1. Decisions will be sent to applicants by mid-January 2010.
