Open House Featuring UA Physics Students’ Research Set for Nov. 20

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.  — Some 25 University of Alabama physics students will display poster presentations of their research during an open house Friday, Nov. 20 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the first floor hallway of Gallalee Hall.

The research, representing graduate students’ work, ranges from a portable solar-powered system for converting seawater to drinking water, to the invisible and intriguing “dark matter,” which comprises more than 90 percent of the universe’s matter, but whose source is debated.

The public is invited to this free event, said Dr. Gary Mankey, professor and graduate director of physics in UA’s department of physics and astronomy. Attendees can vote for their favorite presentation and register for drawings of various University of Alabama paraphernalia to be given away as door prizes, courtesy of The University of Alabama National Alumni Association. Refreshments will be served.

UA’s department of physics and astronomy is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Team.
