Changing Tides, the new online magazine, will launch Oct. 5 with its football issue. Changing Tides tackles a different campus issue with each edition through feature articles, video interviews and multimedia projects. Refresh your computer desktop for fall with one of the brand-new wallpapers developed by UA’s Web Communications team, now available online. Incorporating a series of images taken by University photographers, the wallpapers are a great way to enjoy the campus scenery right at your desk. The UA collegiate license tag is available at local county license offices. Both numbered tags and personalized tags are available; the cost of either one is $50 above the normal tag cost. Collegiate license tags may be purchased at any time, regardless of the individual’s tag renewal month. UA’s National Alumni Association raised more than $3 million through the car tag program in the 2007-2008 fiscal year—the most of any university in the state. Funds raised through the statewide program are used for scholarships for graduate and undergraduate students. Voter registration for out-of-state students. The next general election is Nov. 3. Even though Alabama will not hold a general election in 2009, several states will hold gubernatorial elections and special elections. The deadline for voter registration for the upcoming November elections varies from state to state, but it typically is in early October. If you reside in a state other than Alabama, contact your state or local election officials for election and voter registration information. You can also visit the Web site of the Election Assistance Commission at http://www.eac.gov/index_html1 to review the federal postcard form for voter registration.
New emergency notification system: UA Alerts. To keep you better informed if severe weather or an emergency occurs on campus, the University has installed UA Alerts, a technology tool that sends voice calls and text messages to your cell phone and e-mails to your myBama account. In an emergency, an e-mail will be sent to your myBama account. Please make sure that your contact information on myBama is updated. If you do not check your myBama e-mail account, then you need to turn on e-mail forwarding. You can find directions for doing this under the Student tab on myBama. To view and make changes to your information online, log in to your myBama account at http://mybama.ua.edu.

The Student Health and Wellness Fair will be Sept. 30 at the Ferguson Plaza. Learn how to improve your physical, mental, spiritual, social and environmental health. The English Graduate Organization will host a 50 cents paperback book sale on Sept. 30, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., in front of Morgan Hall. Profits will benefit English graduate students in their academic and professional pursuits.
Provost Judy Bonner and Vice Provost Mark Nelson invite faculty, staff and students to bring their lunches and join them for open-ended discussions to get a “pulse check” of the University environment. The informal meetings will be held in 204-A Ferguson Student Center (behind Starbucks) at noon on Oct. 1 and Nov. 13.

The Women’s Resource Center at UA will kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Oct. 1 with the third annual Breast Cancer Tree of Honor and Remembrance month-long display and the Susan G. Komen On the Go mobile experience. The bright pink Komen on the Go breast cancer awareness trailer, which opens into an interactive learning center, will be located next to the Gorgas House on Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Women’s Resource Center will set up four Breast Cancer Awareness Trees of Honor and Remembrance across campus for the UA community to write messages on pink ornaments to remember those who have lost their lives to or survived breast cancer. Stay Beautiful, Stay Informed: A Healthy Skincare Seminar will be held Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the “Tut Hut.” Hosted by Sigma Lambda Gamma, this seminar will feature a certified esthetician, who will show attendees how to protect themselves from the sun and how to correct sun damage, aging and acne. The UA Office of Community Affairs will host Community Culture Fest 2009 on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2-6 p.m. in downtown Northport. The community festival will feature live entertainment, food and events honoring the West Alabama area’s rich cultural and artistic history. Alabama Music Hall of Fame member Rick Carter will perform at the festival. Other entertainment includes the Alabama Blues Project, Homemade Jamz, Mariachi Mexicana, Caroline Shines, the UA Gospel Choir and Eric Essix. Crimson Ride will provide pickup and drop-off at the UA Ferguson Student Center.
The October Brown Bag Lecture Series will be held Oct. 7 at 12:30 p.m. in 308 Manly Hall. Master’s students Amy Brock-Reed and Annie Herlocker will lead a discussion on women in the book arts.
