Social Work Groups Sponsor Benefit Concert for UA Student, Staff Member with Cancer

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Several organizations in The University of Alabama School of Social Work are sponsoring a benefit concert and silent auction Friday, July 3, from 6 p.m.-midnight at Little Willie’s in Tuscaloosa to help two individuals in the school who have been diagnosed with cancer.

The Social Work Association for Cultural Awareness, various School of Social Work faculty and staff members, along with the Doctoral Student Organization are co-sponsoring the benefit concert and silent auction for Susan Cook Broughton, manager of fiscal affairs in the school, diagnosed with stage IV mucosal melanoma cancer, and Josh Wimberly, a social work doctoral student, diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

Broughton and Wimberly are facing significant medical expenses. The benefit concert is focused on providing direct financial assistance and support to them during this difficult time and all proceeds from the event will be used for their medical expenses.

The benefit at Little Willie’s, located at 2350 Fourth St. in downtown Tuscaloosa, will feature performances by Ham Bagby, Josh Hilliker, Billy Snowden, Catherine Mountain, Tommy Gardner and Patti Townsend.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased by contacting Sandy Wilson at 205/242-7557 or Vicky Carter at 205/242-7692.

The silent auction will begin at 7 p.m. and includes a Toshiba 15-inch flat screen TV, two paintings by folk art-blues artist Lennie Jones, autographed UA athletic items and more.

Charitable donations can also be made to the Friends of Susan Broughton bank account and/or the Friends of Josh Wimberly bank account at any Alabama Credit Union or mailed to The University of Alabama School of Social Work to the attention of Dr. Cassandra Simon, P.O. Box 870314, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0314. Checks must be made payable to the order of Friends of Susan Broughton or Friends of Josh Wimberly.

Organizers of the benefit invite the University and West Alabama communities to this charitable event for a night of music and fun.
