ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Applications for the 2009 SGA Spring Book Scholarships are now available in the SGA office. Applications are due by noon April 24 in the SGA office. A total of $2,000 will be distributed in the form of five $400 scholarships. These scholarships are merit-based and not dependent on financial need. More information: Miland Simpler.

Alabama in Ghana Summer Abroad will be May 28–June 12. For the sixth consecutive year, the Alabama in Ghana Program is enrolling students for the summer 2009 trip. This is a two-week, six-credit hour experiential course open to all majors. More information: http://bama.ua.edu/~ghana-al/photo.html.

UA will recognize the achievement of outstanding students and faculty during 2009 Honors Week activities April 5-10. The Tapping on the Mound ceremony will be held Friday, April 10, at 2 p.m. on the Mound at the west side of the UA Quad (rain location will be Moody Music Concert Hall). Campuswide honoraries Omicron Delta Kappa, Mortar Board, Blue Key National Honor Society and Anderson Society will induct new members at this time. For a list of events, click here.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference. Undergraduate students who are doing research or creative activities with a UA faculty mentor will present their work at the second annual UA Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference, April 13, 8 a.m., Ferguson Center. WVUA-FM 90.7 The Capstone is now accepting applications for summer 2009 and fall 2009/spring 2010 staff. Many positions are open. Capstone Mentors is now accepting applications for fall 2009. Capstone Mentors is a student organization that helps at-risk students in the Tuscaloosa community by serving as mentors in local elementary, middle and high schools. “My Economy is Whack…but What Now?” will be held April 13 at 7 p.m. in 20 Alston Hall. Topics to be discussed include the stimulus packages, bailouts, strong American corporations, tuition, career choices and financial responsibility. More information: Jacob Summers.

The Resonance Show Choir will perform April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Moody Concert Hall. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the door. More information: Michael Zauchin.

The 2009 Tee-Time Goes Green Fashion Show will be April 14 at 7 p.m. on the front lawn of Doster Hall. The garments seen on the runway will be auctioned off immediately following the runway show. Admission is $5. More information: Grant Ballard.

Cold Stone for CAPS will be April 14 at Cold Stone Creamery from 6 p.m. until closing. The event is hosted by Sigma Delta Tau sorority. All proceeds will go to Child Abuse Prevention Services. More information: Becky Rich.

Covering Obama’s first 100 days. Susan Page, Washington Bureau chief for USA Today, will speak at noon, Wednesday, April 15 in 216 Phifer Hall. Page has covered the past eight presidential elections and five White House administrations. She will discuss Barack Obama’s start and what it signals about the future. The talk, which is open to all students, is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the UA Campus Readership Program, which provides free copies of USA Today and The New York Times for students to use in the classroom.
