ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

  • Applications for the 2009 SGA Spring Book Scholarships are now available in the SGA office. Applications are due by noon, April 24 in the SGA office. A total of $2,000 will be distributed in the form of five $400 scholarships. These scholarships are merit-based and not dependent on financial need. More information: Miland Simpler.
  • The College of Community Health Sciences is offering two undergraduate courses in interim 2009. CHS 101 Emergency Medical Services will assist the student in developing the knowledge and cognitive skills needed to recognize and manage life-threatening and potentially life-threatening situations. CHS 200 Health and Wellness Advocacy is designed to motivate, teach and engage students in the area of peer health education. More information: Glenn Davis at 348-4549.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

  • A-Day is set for April 18 with kickoff at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN. The Walk of Fame begins at Denny Chimes at 12:15 p.m. Gates at the stadium will open at 11 a.m. Gates 17/19 through 27/29 will not be open. Gates 18 and 28 will be made available to access the south spirals with temporary walkways through the construction zone. The inner core of campus will be closed four hours prior to kickoff. All seating sections will be open and admission will be free. Bags will be checked at the gates. Concession stands will be open.   • To avoid long lines in August, register now for your fall parking permit through myBama. More information: www.bamaparking.ua.edu.
  • SGA director applications are now available online. They may be submitted online or delivered to the SGA office. Applications are due April 17.
  • The SOURCE is currently accepting applications for team members. Anyone wanting to gain valuable experience and work with student organizations is encouraged to apply. Click here to apply. Applications are due April 17. More information: Alex Karagas.
  • WVUA-FM 90.7 The Capstone is now accepting applications for summer 2009 and fall 2009/spring 2010 staff. Many positions are open. Applications are available in the WVUA studios in 288 Reese Phifer Hall. You may also contact the station by e-mail to have a copy of the application sent to you. More information: Claire Brucker.
  • Capstone Mentors is now accepting applications for fall 2009. Capstone Mentors is a student organization that helps at-risk students in the Tuscaloosa community by serving as mentors in local elementary, middle and high schools. Honors College students can earn credit hours for mentoring by registering for UH 105 or UH 120. For an application or more information: Sarah Beth Henson.

EVENTS, ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

  • “Vital Signs: Social Responsibility and the Prognosis for 21st Century Global Health” will be April 15 at 4 p.m. in Ferguson Theatre. Congressman Artur Davis (D-AL) will speak on the prospects for change in the American healthcare infrastructure. This event is open to all students. More information: Mary Harmon Rountree.
  • National Student Employment Week is April 13-17. UA and its community partners employ more than 2,400 student employees. Events for the week include a Work Study Banquet April 15 and a “Meet the Employers” event April 16 from noon to 2 p.m. at Ferguson Center.
  • The 2009 Tee-Time Goes Green Fashion Show will be April 14 at 7 p.m. on the front lawn of Doster Hall. The garments seen on the runway will be auctioned off immediately following the runway show. Admission is $5. More information: Grant Ballard.
  • Cold Stone for CAPS will be April 14 at Cold Stone Creamery from 6 p.m. until closing. The event is hosted by Sigma Delta Tau sorority. All proceeds will go to Child Abuse Prevention Services. More information: Becky Rich.
  • The Afro-American Gospel Choir 38th Anniversary Celebration will be April 15-19. A forum titled “Can you be a Christian and…?” will be April 15 at 7 p.m. in 360 Ferguson Center. Christian Night Club will be April 18 at 7 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. This event is an open microphone night, which will showcase local Christian talent. The Anniversary Concert will be April 19 at St. Paul Baptist Church at 4 p.m. This concert is free and open to the public. More information: Tanisha Daniels.
  • Sen. Jeff Sessions will speak April 15 in 205 Gorgas at 9 a.m. He will be discussing the stimulus package and what it is doing for students. More information: Anne Elizabeth Davis.
  • The C&IS Executive Council will hold a Silent Auction April 16 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Reese Phifer Rotunda. All proceeds will go toward “Students Helping Students” book scholarships for fall 2009. More information: Shelby Chandler at 348-8597.
  • “Covering Obama’s First 100 Days” will be April 15 at noon in 216 Reese Phifer. Susan Page, USA Today’s Washington Bureau chief, will discuss President Barack Obama’s start and what it signals about the future. Page has covered the past eight presidential elections and five White House administrations. More information: Dr. Jennifer Greer at 348-6304.
  • “Smurf Out” Poverty will be April 16 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Plaza. Please wear either a blue shirt, white pants and white hat or a blue shirt, red pants and red hat. You also must have a blue face, arms and hands. Body paint will be provided at the event. Cost is $2. All proceeds will go to a local food pantry. This event is hosted by Chi Alpha campus ministries.   • COE does ART will perform “The Big Bad Musical,” a courtroom comedy about the trial of Big Bad Wolf, April 17 at 7 p.m. and April 19 at 4 p.m. COE does ART is a musical theater group composed of only engineering students. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door or from a cast member. More information: coedoesart@yahoo.com.
  • Alabama Students for Life Conference will be April 19 from 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m. at Bryant Conference Center. The event will include many noteworthy speakers, as well as a showing of a video on declining birthrates around the world. Cost is $25 and includes breakfast and lunch.   • Earthfest 2009 will be April 19 on the Quad in celebration of Earth Day. Festivities include live music and entertainment. Art contributed by students and local artists also will be on display, and vegetarian, vegan and organic cuisine will be available. Proceeds from donations collected before and during the event will benefit “Crimson Clover Gardens,” an on-campus organic farming project. More information: Emily Roberson.
  • Sundown Cinema Sundays will show “Yes Man” April 19 on the Quad at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Free food, drinks and popcorn also will be provided. More information: Rachel Kelly.
  • The Graduate School is pleased to announce the 2009 recipient of the Last Lecture Award, Dr. Utz McKnight, assistant professor of political science. McKnight will give a lecture titled “Why Apologize for What We Do?” April 27 at 6:30 p.m. in 30 Alston Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. More information: Dr. Natalie Adams.
