United Greek Council Formed at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Office of Greek Affairs at The University of Alabama has announced the creation of the United Greek Council, the fourth Greek governing council on campus, joining the Interfraternity Council, the Alabama Panhellenic Association and the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

The UGC is currently comprised of three historically multicultural organizations – Delta Xi Phi, Sigma Lambda Beta and Sigma Lambda Gamma.

“We are thrilled with the creation of the United Greek Council,” said Gentry McCreary, director of Greek Affairs at the University. “This new council will give renewed purpose and strength to the growing number of multicultural students and organizations on our campus.”

The primary purpose of the UGC is to unite its member organizations in order to share ideas and resources, promote mutual respect and equality, and provide a support network for involved students. The UGC will also work to serve as a forum for discussion and debate on issues and concerns important to the general campus and the Greek community in particular.

After drafting and ratifying a constitution and bylaws, the UGC held its organizational meeting March 2 and elected the following officers:

President — Juan Silvas, Sigma Lambda Beta

External Vice President — Sean Boykin, Sigma Lambda Beta

Internal Vice President — Lia Walberg, Delta Xi Phi

Treasurer — Jessica Trebiño, Sigma Lambda Gamma

Secretary — Tiffany Reese, Delta Xi Phi

Parliamentarian — Sam Alexander, Sigma Lambda Gamma

“I am honored to serve as the first president of this council,” Silvas said. “I look forward to working with other leaders within the Greek community to promote the ideals of our organizations and to further unify our Greek community.”
