University shuts down for spring break

Different facilities on campus, including CrimsonRide, the Ferguson Center, the Student Health Center and RHA all are getting ready to shut down for limited or no spring break hours…Browne said select dorms will remain open for spring break in order to meet the needs for certain students, especially the international students…

Before students leave campus for spring break, the University of Alabama Police Department and the Tuscaloosa Police Department are encouraging all students to remember some safety tips to keep in mind during their week…

Duane Lamb, assistant vice president for facilities and grounds, said the progress of making the campus more physically attractive is a science. “We found in some of the studies that a large percent of people within the first 15 or 20 [minutes] on campus will make their decision if they want to come here or not,” Lamb said. “That’s a big number when nearly 65 percent make that decision that quickly.”…In addition, the University completed many upscale projects over the summer, including irrigation work, planting and landscaping at various buildings on campus, such as Farrah Hall, Gallalee Hall and Denny Chimes. There have also been new flowerpots installed near Alumni Hall as well…

Alabama counties report surge of double-digit unemployment

…Surging unemployment across Alabama shows how the state’s once booming automotive manufacturing and service sectors have fallen victim to a devastating U.S. recession that began in December 2007, said Ahmad Ijaz, an economic researcher for the University of Alabama. “The Black Belt is being especially hard hit, but it’s hitting more populated counties as well,” he said. “And it’s not just the apparel and textile plants anymore, like in the past. Even auto plants and suppliers are laying people off.” Ijaz said…”The last time Tuscaloosa County was in double-digit unemployment was February 1990, and that was before we got auto-related industry,” he said…
