Best First Credit Cards
WalletHub – Oct. 15
Kimberly Watkins, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, College of Human Environmental Sciences, Department of Consumer Sciences, University of Alabama. When do you recommend people get their first credit card? That depends. Length of credit history accounts for 15% of a credit score, so ideally you would want someone to start early like during college. However, I would really want someone to take the time getting to know and understand their financial behaviors and financial capacity before signing up for a credit card. For example, if someone is impulsive, and they don’t have any means of creating barriers to counter their impulsivity, I would suggest that they work on their impulsivity issues before getting a credit card. Also, if someone is credit adverse, they need to understand why and how this affects their credit score. In either case, a traditional credit card may not be a good fit for either. They could look into getting secured credit cards or becoming an authorized user on a caregiver’s account who is in good financial standing.
