UA Receives Scholarship Support from the Wachovia Foundation

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama has received a $250,000 gift from The Wachovia Foundation to establish the Wachovia Foundation First Generation Scholarships. The first Wachovia Foundation First Generation Scholars will be selected beginning in the fall of 2009.

“We are grateful for the scholarship support that The Wachovia Foundation has provided,” said UA President Robert E. Witt. “These scholarships will changes lives as they provide more opportunities for our first generation students to finance their education.”

The mission of The Wachovia Foundation is to build strong, vibrant communities and improve the quality of life, while making a positive difference.

“Education is a key building block of strong communities and we applaud The University of Alabama’s efforts to help first generation students realize their academic potential,” said Mike Russell, Tuscaloosa market president for Wachovia Bank. “We are proud to invest in the next generation of leaders in Alabama through the Wachovia Foundation First Generation Scholarship program.”

The “Our Students. Our Future.” campaign’s $500 million goal includes $250 million for student scholarships. The remaining funds are allocated for scholarship support. The campaign has raised more than $537 million since 2002.
