TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Women Involved in Learning and Leading program, supported by the Women’s Resource Center and the department of women’s studies at The University of Alabama, will sponsor a week of literacy Nov. 3-7 on campus.
The WILL program has created a literacy awareness campaign designed to combat illiteracy in West Alabama by encouraging reading. The week of events will kick off with a book drive and information table about literacy. The information table will be set up in the Ferguson Center Monday-Tuesday, Nov. 3-4.
The WILL students will be collecting age-appropriate elementary books for third graders. The bins for the book drive will be located throughout campus until Nov. 24.
All of the books collected during the drive will be donated to the Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School library in Tuscaloosa. On Friday, Nov. 7, members of the WILL program will read the Dr. Seuss book “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” to third grade classes at the school. A teachers appreciation luncheon will also be held there that day.
All members of the campus and community are invited to visit the literacy information table and donate books.
