UA Hosts Alabama Governor’s Conference on Obesity June 12-13

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – “Prevention, Assessment and Treatment” will be the focus of this year’s Alabama Governor’s Conference on Obesity, June 12-13 at The University of Alabama.

“Often we spend an entire conference trying to define the problem. This year’s conference will focus on practical solutions that professionals involved in the prevention, assessment and treatment of obesity can bring back to their communities, schools and workplaces,” said Dr. Rebecca Kelly, UA director of health promotion and wellness and conference chair.

The conference, to be held at the Bryant Conference Center, will feature presentations and guest speakers from The University of Alabama and UAB, along with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the Cooper Clinic, WebMD, the American Psychological Association, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, and other leading organizations in health.

Dr. Donald E. Williamson, state health officer for the Alabama Department of Public Health, will give the opening address June 12 at 10:30 a.m. His address, “The Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of Overweight and Obesity in Alabama,” will highlight the successful programs that have been generated around the state as a result of this plan.
