UA Brown Bag Lecture to Focus on Women and Dating

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Bronwen Lichtenstein, assistant professor of criminal justice at The University of Alabama, will present the Nov. 7 Brown Bag lecture on “Starting Over: Dating Risks among Midlife and Older Women,” at 12:30 p.m. in 102 Manly Hall.

The Brown Bag Series is sponsored by the UA Women’s Resource Center and the department of women’s studies

Lichtenstein will speak on the dating experiences and risks of women over 35 who were interviewed after leaving long-term relationships. She will present research about women’s risk of sexually-transmitted infection while transitioning from one partner to another.

In addition to her role as assistant professor at UA, Lichtenstein is a visiting research fellow at the Center for Rural HIV/STD Prevention at Indiana University and a member of the Governor of Alabama’s Commission on HIV/AIDS in Children, Youth and Adults. She has published extensively in a variety of journals on women’s health, sexually-transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, illicit drug use, and African-American health.

Lichtenstein’s funded research involves projects on sexually-transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS among children, women and minority groups. In 2007, she received the Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Article Award from the Race, Gender and Class section of the American Sociological Association.

The Brown Bag Series features a speaker, movie or other activity on topics of interest to UA faculty, staff and students and the community. The events are free and open to the public.
