TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center and the department of women’s studies are presenting “Feminism Spoken Here” a series of Brown Bag Lectures with the next discussion on domestic violence set for Wednesday, Oct. 3.
Kim Bart, director of the UA Domestic Violence Law Clinic, will present the Oct. 3 lecture on “Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Harassment in West Alabama: Laws, Legal Resources and Suggestions for Legislative Change.”
The Brown Bag Lectures will all be held at 12:30 p.m. in 102 Manly Hall on campus.
Bart will share information on the current state of the law regarding protections for victims of abuse and present some ideas for legislative change in order to improve those protections. She holds a bachelor’s degree in women’s studies and an M.P.A. from Syracuse University. She received her J.D. from Duke University School of Law in 2002 and an LL.M. in advocacy from Georgetown University Law Center in 2004.
Bart’s areas of academic expertise include gender and law, domestic violence law, poverty law and policy. While at Georgetown, Bart served as supervising attorney and teaching fellow for the Federal Legislation Clinic. She also worked on behalf of Catholic Charities USA to develop and lobby their legislative agenda, with a focus on social policies affecting the lives of women, children and families.
She is currently an active member of the Alabama Attorney General’s Task Force on Domestic Violence.
Each month, the Women’s Resource Center and the department of women’s studies sponsor the Brown Bag Series consisting of a speaker, movie or other activity on topics of primary interest to UA faculty, staff and students.
The series will include:
-Nov. 7, Dr. Bronwen Lichtenstein, UA assistant professor of criminal justice, will present “Starting Over: Dating Risks Among Midlife & Older Women After Relationship Dissolution.”
-Dec. 5, Dr. Tricia McElroy UA assistant professor of English, will discuss, “The Popular Campaign Against Mary Queen of Scots.”
The events are free and open to the public. All members of the campus community are invited and encouraged to attend.
