TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — First Charter Mutual Holding Company, the parent company of CharterBank of West Point, Ga., with company chairman John W. “Bubber” Johnson, Jr. and president and CEO Robert L. Johnson, both of Lanett, have made a scholarship gift of $61,335 to The University of Alabama’s “Our Students. Our Future.” campaign. The contributions to the John Will and Cordelia Harrell Johnson Memorial Endowed Scholarship and the John W. and Elsie Brinson Johnson Memorial Endowed Scholarship bring the total of the scholarship endowments to more than $100,000 each.
“Our intention with the additional contributions to both scholarships was to increase the number of recipients and the amount of the scholarship award from each,” said Bubber Johnson. Currently six undergraduate students at UA receive financial aid from the two scholarships.
In addition to the two scholarships, First Charter, the Johnsons, and the Alabama State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police created and contribute to the Colonel Floyd H. and Grace L. Mann Memorial Endowed Scholarship for students in the College of Continuing Studies.
“We are grateful for donors like the Johnsons, CharterBank and the Fraternal Order of Police, who generously support our efforts to provide students the quality education expected of The University of Alabama,” said Bill Elrod, director of advancement and community college relations for UA’s College of Continuing Studies. “Students and the University will reap the rewards of the Johnson Scholarships long into the future.”
The “Our Students. Our Future.” campaign’s $500 million goal includes $250 million for student scholarships. The remaining funds are allocated to faculty support, facilities and priority needs. The campaign has raised more than $340 million since 2002.
