State’s Next Generation of Leaders on Campus to Attend UA Youth Summit

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — More than 200 top high school students from across the state will be attending the eighth annual Alabama Youth Summit at The University of Alabama Thursday-Friday, Nov. 30-Dec.1, to discuss issues affecting Alabamians today.

Each year, past participants of programs including Alabama Boys State, Alabama Girls State and YMCA Youth in Government converge on the UA campus to develop a youth legislative agenda for the state.

Students will debate political issues of importance to them at the summit, discussing education; the justice system; technological, economic and environmental development; health care and human relations; and tax, election and constitutional reform.

Students will develop legislative bills that will be presented and debated in a general assembly on Friday, Dec.1 from 12:30-2:35 p.m. in 30 Alston Hall.

Approved pieces of legislation will be presented as the Youth Legislative Agenda for Alabama to a representative from Gov. Riley’s office following the assembly from 2:55-3:30 p.m. in 30 Alston. (Media are invited to this presentation.)

The annual event provides an excellent opportunity for participants to learn about the democratic process as they develop policy solutions to address issues and challenges facing the state.

Sponsors for the event include UA Student Affairs, Alumni Affairs, Freshman Forum and the Student Government Association.
