TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama College of Continuing Studies is sponsoring the 19th annual Alabama Governor’s Safety and Health Conference Aug. 28-30 at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach.
The Alabama Governor’s Safety and Health Conference is considered the premier safety and health conference in the Southeast. It is also the largest conference of its type in Alabama and the Gulf Coast region. It promotes occupational safety and health in Alabama.
The conference is designed for people who are involved with safety and health programs in the workplace, including: safety and health professionals, plant superintendents, human resource managers, compliance managers, loss control specialists, building superintendents, safety training supervisors, state agencies, environmental professionals, occupational health nurses, case managers and worker’s compensation managers. Interested attendees should check on continuing education credits.
The conference is made up of two general sessions on Monday and Wednesday of the conference. At these sessions there will be three keynote speakers: G. Ruffner Page, a member of the board of directors of First American Bank, Alabama National Bancorporation and McWayne Inc., will present on Monday with Patrick R. Tyson, a partner at Constangy, Brooks & Smith law firm; Scott Waddle former commanding officer of USS Greeneville will present on Wednesday.
In addition to the general speakers, breakout sessions covering occupational safety, health and environmental topics will be offered including “Covenants of ROSE…A Belief System for Safety Excellence,” “Working Alert: The Sleep That Kills,” and “Human Behavior and Safety – Safety, Drugs, & Rock & Roll.”

Continuing education units (CEUs) are available for those in the following organizations: Alabama Board of Nursing, Alabama State Nursing Association, Board of Certified Safety Professionals, and pending approval-the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
